Cambodia

Cambodia is situated in South East Asia between Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Despite its ideal location in the heart of the region, Cambodia remains a poor country. The country’s history is peppered with war and strife, and although this has been a decade of peace in Cambodia, the Nation is still recovering. Cambodia’s troubles perhaps came to a head in the 1970s when Pol Pot and the fiercely pro-communist Khmer Rouge forces took control of the country. During the heart of their regime, from 1975 to 1978, over 2 million Cambodians died from execution, forced hardship, or starvation. However the effects of the Khmer Rouge will be evident for a long time still. Pol Pot wanted to start Cambodian history again from “year zero”. However in order to indoctrinate the nation, he killed those who he believed were to advance, this included doctors, scientists and academics. He also abolished all schools in favor of indoctrination classes. By 1979 there were only three hundred Cambodians left in the country with higher education. When the country recovered, children were being taught by ill educated adults. These are no grounds for a country to try to mend itself. The degeneration of the country.
